Artist Statement
This is a series of abstract paintings inspired by vision of the Glasshouse Mountains while driving through the escarpment from the hinterland down to the plains. The drive experience can best be described as a number of incursions on vision during the 40-minute round trip. The paintings are in response to the disorientation caused by strobe sunlight through the broken tree canopy, bleached out noon forms, inclines and falls juxtaposed against horizons that appear and disappear. The volcanic mountains rise out of the plains and incredulously appear looming and large irrespective of how far or close the road has taken the driver. Passing glimpses and anticipated views overlap to create a fleeting present. I become a “driver car”, as described by Tim Dant (2004, 63). The project is derived from perceiving the landscape holistically and fluidly due to vision being mobile, as opposed to a fixed-point view. The interpenetrating states leak into one another and as such temporality is accepted as one indivisible multiplicity.
